How does Reiki heal?

Updated: Mar 28, 2020

Reiki is a Japanese stress-relief and relaxation technique that enhances the body's own healing mechanisms. But what does that mean? Stress, particularly chronic stress, causes disease.

"Chronic stress has a significant effect on the immune system that ultimately manifest an illness. It raises catecholamine and suppressor T cells levels, which suppress the immune system. This suppression, in turn raises the risk of viral infection. Stress also leads to the release of histamine, which can trigger severe broncho-constriction in asthmatics. Stress increases the risk for diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight individuals, since psychological stress alters insulin needs. Stress also alters the acid concentration in the stomach, which can lead to peptic ulcers, stress ulcers or ulcerative colitis." (National Center for Biotechnology Information - NIH)

Stress wreaks havoc throughout the body making us more susceptible to both acute and long-term illnesses. Reiki works to relieve stress and clear blocked energy within the body to free the body's immune system to operate more effectively.

But how does Reiki differ from massage or any other type of relaxation technique?

Well, I am so glad you asked. Massage works specifically on the physical body to release physical stress. Reiki works physically and energetically to relax the whole person. And, one of the most powerful and beautiful aspects of Reiki is that it can be conducted 100% without touch! Whether you are uncomfortable with touch, are home-bound or immuncomprimised, or have some other consideration, you can benefit from the healing effects of Reiki when you are in the comfort of your own home. A Reiki practitioner can conduct the session via Distance Reiki and does not need to be in close physical proximity.

Distance Reiki provides the same benefits as an in-person Reiki session, but they can be done anywhere and at any time. When you choose a Distance Reiki session, you should treat the appointment time as you would for an in-person session. Find a nice, quiet, comfortable place to lie down. Set your intention to receive the healing Reiki energy and lay quietly with your eyes closed. Pay attention to your breathing and allow yourself to breathe deeply and evenly. The practitioner will conduct the session using the distance Reiki technique to connect with you energetically during the allotted session time. It's that simple.

Reiki is completely painless and non-invasive and is practiced in over 800 hospitals and clinics throughout the United States, including:

  • John’s Hopkins University Hospital

  • Cleveland Clinic

  • Yale New Haven Hospital

  • Duke Integrative Medicine

  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

  • Children’s Hospital Boston

  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

  • Columbia University Medical Center

  • Reproductive Medical Associates

Reiki works to compliment any existing treatments, protocols, or medications safely and effectively. Life energy is inherently positive and will only ever work to serve a person’s highest good.

This isn't to say that Reiki is a cure-all or can replace medical treatment. Reiki is a *complimentary* therapy and should not replace any specific form of treatment determined by a physician. If you are feeling better, than by all means work with your physician to revise any treament plans, but do not replace medical advice with Reiki sessions.

Reiki is centered on the person and not a specific symptom. It can be effective for you no matter what you are experiencing in your life, how your body is doing physically, or how you feel or think. Reiki will work to unblock your own personal energy and make way for healing to occur.
